I suppose you could use Storage Spaces Direct (all windows across the entire thing) but I wouldn't consider SSD at all mature nor production ready, especially at this scale.

Thanks, had not heard of this.

DataOn solutions fully support this and vice versa. They are experienced with this kind of scale and much larger.

Regarding evolution we are probably more geared towards surviving external threats than we are towards surviving internal organ failures by old age and a sedentary lifestyle.

Right, almost certainly. Partially because in the big picture, that's the bigger threat. Not in this particular moment in time, although in parts of the world that remains true. But to get to where we are, we have to be geared towards overall survival and can't change the design quickly when the situation suddenly changes.

For those who use SCCM, do you host the database on the same server as the SCCM application, or do you have SQL server as its own VM?

I am replacing SCCM in our test environment, and will be doing the same eventually in our production environment. The current one has SQL server host locally. But since were looking to start over, I figured it would be worth weighing the pros and cons of keeping SQL Server local or having you be on the remote server.

In my last job, we ran SCCM for a while and we had everything on one VM. (Small set up with ~200 PCs). It ran OK.

I'd suggest keeping it to one host for your test environment, and separating them out for your production setup.

IMHO, dispersing the storage between the hosts and configuring data replication between them would be the best option.

Creating several tiers for the migration of your VMs is always nice to have - downtime strikes unexpectedly.
