As I sit here in the hotel here in Tennessee, I see a network jack, and lamp that has a network cable. The hotel does have Wifi which is what I am using.

But I often wonder about the security of places as such. And just how many devices can one practically tote around. Heavy travelers such as @scottalanmiller don't have unlimited space to work with while having to navigate air ports, rental cars, taxis, trains and hot-seat office space.

Laptop, cell phone, chargers for same, external USB drives add up in space. can you justify having a 15foot network cable, router/VPN as well?

Or is it just as well to use the hotel connection directly.

Why would you need any of that. Make sure your computer's firewall is on. And use known sites with HTTPS and you'd be fine.

Spin up a VPN server in the cloud for whatever locality you are traveling to, test connectivity, and connect once you get there.

Pertino doesn't encrypt you default traffic without you building your own network gateways elsewhere.

I agree. It's not a realistic concern for most activities. I really don't care if people can see me browsing 9gag or whatever that is not SSL and HTTPS is a VPN already, so if a VPN is going to protect you, you already have one.
