So we are considering some options to recover some data from a failed server (see previous thread.) The current failed server is an HP Proliant DL385 G7 with a SmartArray P410 RAID controller with eight 10K SAS drives in OBR10.

Right now we do not have the server in front of us and are discussing the situation and wondering what is the fastest way to recover data from the system. To the best of our knowledge there has been no failure, of any kind, with the storage subsystem. The issues with the server are purely at the motherboard or power supply level.

We have an older HP Proliant DL385 G5 that is sitting idle in the lab facility. I believe that that machine has matching drive bays and a matching number of this (or this might be a moot conversation.) It has a SmartArray P400 in it itself, but we would not want to use that, I am sure.

So my question is whether or not it would be reasonably feasible to take the P410 out of the G7, move it and all of the drives to the G5 and run from there to recover the data stored there before continuing on to do diagnostics on the G7?

      Thoughts?

I pulled up the Quick sheet on the p410 RAID card, and it doesn't mention any set machine limitations.

However - I do realize we are going backwards by two,.. so this doesn't actually mean it is possible.

This article mentions a whole different system series, however similar in question:

We have a DL185 G5 as well, but it has completely different drive bays.

Oh that's not encouraging. I wonder if the P400 will recognize the array?

Yes, we have backups. But why go for a small amount of data loss when you can have zero?

There was a comment that there was little difference between the P400 and the P410. However there may be enough of a different to not mount.

Yeah, that is the concern. Only takes a tiny firmware change to cause a major problem. It all comes down to backwards compatibility.

Can you remove the P410 from the G7? It couldn't hurt to try it.

Looking into that but there are concerns mentioned above that it might not fit without adapters that we can't get.

So HP engineering said that this should work but they had not tested it. Make sure you are fully up to date on the firmware and the P410 should be able to go to the P400 safely. But.... caveat emptor, of course.
