I turned that feature off, but why would such a bad idea that so clearly can't work reliably be on by default?

It's based on your Public IP, which isn't that accurate. I live in richmond,va according to my IP address.

Only sometimes. It said that it could not determine it when I went to look into it. But normally, on the same IP, it sets to where I actually am. So it is not consistent.
I get the theory, but that's not a reliable way to tell timezone.

Based on what you've told me, the main uplink is usually satellite, right? That could be it. Or maybe it's relaying to another tower somewhere else.

It's never going to be where your house it. It's wherever the ISP connects to the backbone/peering connections.

Nearly any sat link for this part of the world shows up as Belgium. I'm not on a sat, if I was, that's where it would likely terminate.
