So we took the kids (ages 2 and 5) out to the Farmers' Museum today to learn about how maple syrup is made. We homeschool our kids so doing projects like this to learn about things is important parts of their educational process. We had a really good time today even though it was only nineteen degrees while we were doing it, argh. The maple syrup demonstration was really good and the included pancake breakfast was excellent. We did some other cool things at the museum too, including see the baby bunnies that were just born six weeks ago, meeting the thirteen month old oxen and riding the antique Empire State Carousel many times.

That is the maple syrup being made in the picture above. On the left of the cooking area is the old fashion process like they did in the 1800s. They are making Jack Wax here. On the right is a new cooker that makes maple syrup faster and cheaper. On some of the trees you can just make out buckets collecting sap.

This is in Cooperstown, New York in the famous Leatherstocking Region where @dominica grew up.

We did that many times at Genesee Country Museum and Cummings Nature Center link text when we were still homeschooling. Loved outings like this one.

                  No snow means no syrup.

We were talking about both of those today too. We used to be members of the Genesee Country Museum. We love it there. They have great Halloween and Christmas programs too.

@scottalanmiller We haven't been since we have been back home (and Michael is done with school). I think this summer would be fun to visit again (hint hint)

@Bill-Kindle We have friends who do just that. It has been fun doing the syrup the old fashioned way with them a few times. And making maple sugar and snow candy yummy!

Based on my Research Maple tree is not likely to grow here in our country.
but in our Province we are making Sugarcane syrup.

@Joyfano Nope, and even if they did, you only get to make maple syrup when the sap is running, and a freeze and thaw cycle is necessary for that to happen. Cane syrup is similar, but maple syrup has a distinct flavor that's hard to describe if you've never had the real deal.

Maple needs to freeze. They are a key tree here. Very common.

I am waiting on getting some here. They just started making syrup here in the last week or so. If I wait a little bit it will be richer in taste (the first sap is a little light for me).

I just realized that you can make out the Johnny Walker Platinum behind the syrup.
