So what is the best way to setup a single pve so that we can backup and restore the os. I have not been able to backup and restore using clonezilla. Maybe the proxmox backup server ? Any ideas and answers will be appreciated

      Thanks
      Ronney

So I shutdown the machine and used dd to backup the boot drive and it worked with ext4 filesystem and lvm - I deleted the partitions on the original drive with gparted, dd'd the disk back to it's original spot, rebooted and everything is hunky dory... so I guess for now that's the trick...

@ronneyb you may want to follow these steps:

          Backup:

          1. Log in to the Proxmox web interface.

          2. Select the node or server you want to backup.

          3. Click on the "Backup" button.

          4. Choose the type of backup you want to create, either full backup or incremental backup.

          5. Select the backup storage location.

          6. Click on the "Backup Now" button to start the backup process.

          Restore:

          1. Log in to the Proxmox web interface.

          2. Select the node or server where you want to restore the backup.

          3. Click on the "Restore" button.

          4. Choose the backup file to restore.

          5. Choose the restore options, including backup type, target storage location, and network configuration.

          6. Click on the "Restore Now" button to start the restore process.

          7. After the restore process is complete, restart the Proxmox node or server.

Note: It is essential to follow the backup and restore process carefully to avoid data loss or system failure. Always test the backup and restore process before performing it on a production system.

Just for my own clarification, are you saying you want to backup/restore the Proxmox system?

@ronneyb So the main question is... why would you want to? There isn't much documentation on this because it's not generally considered a good thing to do. You normally just want to reinstall fresh.

Yeah, that's what he is doing.

Actually, it should have no data loss. No data should ever be stored outside of the VM files.

                    Restore:

Log in to the Proxmox web interface.

Select the node or server where you want to restore the backup.

That's for restoring VMs, not ProxMox. By the time you have this interface available, you've already restored ProxMox.
