Fry's Computer Store Chain Now Defunct

All Fry's stores have closed across the US. No warning to employees, they just closed.
Gotta say, I'm happy about this. They have a big presence here and these businesses were crooks. They ran warranty scams, would have fake sales, and sell beat up used products claiming that they were new. Everything about the shopping experience there was icky and dishonest. I'm very glad that they aren't around to mistreat people who don't know how to protect themselves. This opens space in the market for good companies like Microcenter to fill the void.
-
@scottalanmiller I've never been to one of them, but based on your assessment I don't think I would want to go to one either.

Here's hoping Microcenter fills the void. I'm spoiled being close enough to the original Microcenter to make an evening trip there when need be.

Big fan of Microcenter myself. It's nice to see them continue to stay busy over the last 20+ years and their nice stock of Ubiquity products.

We got a few things there, DSLR camera (used and great price), a TV, monitor, vacuum, and other random things. All was a good experience. The TV had some weird Bluetooth issues, but because we had the warranty, they sent someone out to fix it a couple times till they got it right.

I love micro center in general, but I hate their methodology of pushing their employees to get sales.
I assume they get extra pay or something if they help you and put their sticker on your purchase.
I only shop for things I know. I don’t purchase computers there. So I don’t know anything about that side of things.

I've never been to a Microcenter, but that reminds me of another chain that failed in the early '00's (not CompUSA (which also failed), the other, can't remember the name).

Yes, that's it!

@Dashrender I think they failed because of lack of e-commerce and their prices sucked. Best Buy survived, despite being almost a clone of CC.

Frankly BB just sucks today too. They barely carry anything. I buy mice/keyboards and USB sticks from there all the time because I dont' want to wait for delivery (almost no next day delivery here).

I agree, In mid-late 90's, most of their floor space seemed like it was for music, movie and software CD/DVD's. Now it seems wide open an kinda eerie when they are not busy.
-
Wait until they flop too, then score some deals during final sales. My relatives got huge tv, blu ray player and few other electronic devices for next to nothing when Circuit City was closing down.

That is what I see also. Something inside me keeps telling me, never to buy an appliance from there or anything over the occasional mouse/keyboard, USB wireless and/or SSD drive that is on sale.

I bought a new refrigerator last May, we looked at BB first, but they didn't have what we wanted - used a local furniture place, not sure it would be really any different buying from Nebraska Furniture Mart or BB - or hell Costco.

Our kitchen appliances all came from Ikea. It is all black label of known brands.

I didn't mind Fry's, but over time I found Microcenter usually had the specific items I wanted / needed in stock.

But this does remind me - BB was known for getting units from manufactures with unique model numbers so they didn't have to price shop against other vendors - this also caused warranty issues too, if I recall.
Not sure if they are doing that anymore or not.
