      Hi,
What is the best way to install Windows 10 VM (VMware)? I will use it to run POS interface with Oracle Client.
Should I install like a physical box or image an existing clean physical box and reactivate w/ new license?

Is this VMWare Workstation or ESXi? You'll need a retail key on ESXi for sure... probably on Workstation as well, but I'm sure that someone else will chime in on that aspect since I've nudged the licensing door open. I would never try to clone over a P2V for a workstation if you don't have to. Just a fresh install as a VM.

You'd definitely not install physical first them P2V, that's several extra steps and places for things to get weird. Just do a normal, every day ISO install directly on ESXi. It's exactly the same as installing physical, but without the need to P2V and re-activate.

Plus your drives need to change, and the licenses are unlikely to be valid in both places.

Plus, this is almost always a license infringement. You can do it, but according to the licensing, you are supposed to use Windows Server+CALs

He's asking about his POS interface, not server. No server or CALs required unless it is a server.

Anything much cheaper is going to be pirated and you might as well not buy anything at all at that point. The price is basically the price.

However, normally you want to buy via the Volume License store as the version that you are looking at don't provide the option to virtualize them. So they won't do you any good. You need the VL license with SA.

Which is even more expensive 😉

You need a minimum quantity of 5 for VL (you could buy 4 more Windows anything), assuming this is your first time purchasing Windows. Or is that only an Open Value requirement?

I think it applies to everything. But five of anything, yeah.

Yap, hopefully, I only need to get 1 license. As if I need to buy more, I might just need to use one of my physical workstations here instead of VM.

Using a physical workstation for remote Windows 10 is almost always better than trying to go down the VDI route. VDI licensing is draconian and onerous and it's only really useful in special circumstances.

If you can avoid Windows, the VDI is easy.
