      Helping out a friend here.

He has a XPS 13, I think 2018 years model.
It has only USB C ports and is normally used as a desktop and is charged from his Dell monitor.
He was given the computer and doesn't have a charger but needs one urgently to be able to work remotely.

What charger can he use? I'm guessing it's charging over USB because I can't see any other ports. Does it have to be a Dell?

Does Dell have some docking station for this one that isn't dependent on a Dell monitor?

The joyful thing about USB-c is that it's universal! A Full USB-C Charger should output:

          • 5v
          • 9v
          • 12v

So - should be able to do that

            Thanks guys.

It's nice to know that works in real life too and not just in theory.

Does that go for USB-C docking stations as well? All docking stations work on all computers?

From my experience, most docking stations work seamlessly plug and play, even cheaper ones. There used to be a need for a manual DisplayLink driver update for Win 10 but not anymore.

Yeah, the need for drivers is likely the main thing you'll have to deal with.

I have this same exact model Dell XPS 2018 13inch . I use an after market charger. I use a 60W charger, but you can use 45W as well. They are cheap and universal as @gjacobse . You will have you pick of thousands on amazon.

For reference (since I have the same model)

Here is the charger I bought. (I guess it is 65W not 60W):

I am also using this dock at home in addition to USB 3.0 hub:

I use this dock at work, and I do not like it! I must remove and reinsert USB devices on it every time I plug it in. It also can be finicky with the display:

I use HP or Dell USB-C docks depending on if it is a HP or Dell laptop.

Both brands do not work right until they get a firmware update. After that, they work great, with no separate driver installs. Windows just picks it all up.

I've not yet used the USB-C docks on a system with a version of Linux installed as my laptop does not have USB-C. But it is on my list to test out.

I use this 61 watt apple charger for all my USB-C charging needs.

It even works for my P1, but only slow charges that, but as you can see, USC-C dishes out high voltage and at 3 amps, as well as lower voltage for phones.
