Any good self-hosted discord alternatives?
-
Title says it all. Looking for a good, linux based self-hosted alternative to discord.
-
I've heard good things about rocket.chat
-
@EddieJennings Is that a true replacement though? I know the chat functionality is there. I believe video wise it uses Jitsi. Not sure what is does for audio

Ah, for some reason I was only thinking of the chat functionality. Not sure if it can do the other pieces.

Looking for something that provides similar functionality to Discord. I honestly don't care about the video portion but it would be nice to have.

Discord does not do video either.

If you want self hosted Discord/Slack alternative, then you want Rocket.Chat.
Jitsi.meet integration in Rocket is sucky BTW. I could find no way to actually secure it behind channel permissions.

Yes it does, within calls.

I tried to do this a long time ago and ran into the same problem

Calls are not the function of discord. There are a million video call solutions out there. Every chat app offers calls as part of oen to one conversations, and most offer video.

So, why don't you reword your question and post what you are actually wanting to implement?
-
Why not just use Discord? Most of the Slack clones really don't do voice chat channels like Discord does.

I don't care about the video portion or "calls". I just want audio in a channel where everyone in that channel can hear me.

Just curious what is out there. I try to assess the stuff I use every now and then. Never know what you are missing out on

Ah got it. It's not a project just a question. Sorry. Rocket.Chat does Jitsi Meet. Which is actually really nice, you can also host an instance on your own and tie them together. It's not as easy as Discord's voice channels though.

I'll try it again and see where I get. Thanks

I did it last fall, and found I could not secure the jitsi instance in any reasonable fashion.

I don't doubt that. I didn't look closely but Jistsi runs without encryption. Or do you mean only letting people from your server join it?
-
I don't know if it supports voice, but Mattermost is a direct Slack competitor that is OSS and has a free community version.

Jitsi runs with SSL just fine. Yes I meant control of room creation, etc.
