with the power of GPO starting in Server 2008

GPO existed long before 2008. Back in the NT and 2000 days everything was done with startup and login scripts. 2008 offers the same things you could do with scripting.

I think he meant the added functionality that 2008 GPO introduced which didn't exist or were extremely limited previously.

Basically. Starting in 2008, so many things that you had to script before with batch or VBscript are now just options in GPO. That was my point. Not so much that there are tons of new capabilities, but that these features are so much simpler to implement.

I'm glad I read this - Pull settings from the default profile? I'll have to look into this.

This should be baked into your images

Apparently the guy who was doing this wasn't the one who made the image

What exactly do is he do to setup the default profile? This will give you the answer if it can be done with GPO. Adding things like desktop icons are easy via GPO

Just throw the shit into the default profile folder under the users directory. That's easy enough for things like desktop links and such.

Old school way would be to create a "default profile" with all the permissions set and such, rename the old one and put the new one in its place.

Assuming similar hardware and software configurations, it can be pushed via GPO or good old fashioned copy/paste to others via SMB.

You are agreeing with me, but you never answered my question.... 😛

This guy was doing permissions and renaming the old one, etc. I was just wondering if in the age we're in and with the capabilities of GPO if this was really necessary anymore...

Not sure on all exact settings. Is there anything that you'd be limited to doing this way that can't be done via GPO?
