Email received this afternoon from SM:

We have tested Fedora 29 on this MB and found it has video display issue with this MB.

Then we tested Fedora 23 on this MB and it works fine.

It seems the new Fedora OS’s kernel has issue with this MB.

X10SDV-4C+-TLN4F use Aspeed chip for Graphics output.

Please go to this link for its Linux driver information.

That's interesting. I had to put some boot options on the installer when I tried Fedora on another Supermicro server as well. Also on an old HP server for that matter. Can't remember what it was though or where it goes. Nomodeset maybe.

Anyway, not the problem I though it was.

Do you need graphics output at all anymore in servers? Can you solely use IPMI, or does that require a graphics card/chip?

Fedora Server by default has a console only login.

So unless a desktop is being deployed for some particular reason the issue is a compatibility issue with the drivers and not one that should be overlooked.

Yes, I understand that. I'm asking if the physical hardware needs a graphics card/chip at all. Even for console output... I assume it would need something if you're hooking up a monitor, but I don't know if the IPMI NEEDS a graphics chip at all.

Maybe there's a way to install the operating system without that component? Disable the on-board chip in the bios maybe?

Yeah, for console output you need graphics of some kind.

But you don't need a specific graphics driver in linux as all graphics chips can do 80x25 textmode.

But why does the Fedora Server installer run in graphics mode if the server then only does console in textmode? The way I understood the problem here was that it's the installer that hangs, not the OS after installation.

PS. IPMI need a graphic chip or more correctly, IPMI is a graphics chip, CPU, memory and a network interface integrated into one chip.

                  Update...

There is definitely something wrong with this mb.

I have the 6 core version X10SDV-6C and Fedora 29 installs with no errors!

Ah, awesome. Might just be a hardware error. Interesting.

                      Update from SM:
"After we perform more test and use a non-widescreen monitor, we can finish installing Fedora 29 on our 4C version MB."

                        Very odd.
