As a matter of curiosity... Why would you put the servers for your cameras in a Colo?

I'll have memory cards in the cameras themselves for local recording. The point of having something offsite as well is so if someone does break in, they can't carry out the evidence. @JaredBusch found that Wyze has a 5 minute time-out between motion activated recordings to their cloud service, so something else is warranted if I want to grab everything instead of just most things.

I didn't think you had the local recording option with the custom firmware.

So you'll be able to retain video until your internet comes back (if it's not a long time)... Interesting.

Well, bother. I need to go take a look at those docs.

And since you aren't using the Wyzecam firmware or cloud services you shouldn't experience that 5 minute time-out between an event and the recording taking place.

I'm currently running ZoneMinder (for my 1 camera) locally... if I have external internet problems, my camera isn't recording...

To save the power, noise and cooling of having a server in your house.

For me I don't really see the benefit either since you can install ZoneMinder onto a Raspberry Pi.

I get the power, noise, and cooling... I tend to forget about the Noise aspect since I keep my desktops in another room.

Same here, I mean I can hear the server fans from my lab. But it's so trivially to ignore that it doesn't bother even my daughter.

What's the benefits from using the Custom Firmware?

Been thinking about getting some CCTV stuff, like the idea of using PoE splitter to power them as it will be easier to cable some points instead of finding power points.

The custom firmware (with the Wyzecam's) provides you a RTSP to pull the feed into ZoneMinder.

Otherwise there is nothing on the camera that would do this for you and you couldn't use the camera.

So essentially it's a $20 camera turned into something that is likely as good if not better than a large portion of the camera market that charges much more for the same functionality.

There are so many real surveillance cameras for little money that are made for the purpose already. For instance this outdoor model for less than $30:

                          https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hikvision-DS-2CE16D0T-IRF-HD-1080P-IR-20m-IP66-2MP-Bullet-camera-outdoor/264073885252

To get real coverage you need different lenses in different applications and indoor and outdoor options as well. Installing cameras, wiring it all up and installing software and having storage, backups etc and keeping everything running is too much work to save a few bucks.

The hikvision cameras apparently are utter crap and worth avoiding.
