Is it necessary to use plenum cables for homes?
Plenum should always be used for in-wall runs. I'd check you're local building codes to be sure.
Most home construction laws don't require fire retardant cabling, especially for cases like this.
What about home insurances and maybe home warranty?
How would they know? If you were building the house new, they could know. But if you are doing the work yourself in a house you live in.
Nor do I think they would have anything to say, unless there is a law stating as much.

why? It's designed for plenum spaces, not basic in-wall runs.

Legally, not likely as it's your home. As a business it's required as a fire protection mechanism (in at least NY). So for this case, likely not. Would it be a decent recommendation, yeah. . sure but it cost more.
Does NY require Plenum rated even if you are not running it in plenum spaces?

That is not what plenum is.

They are super common in some parts of the country, like Texas. In NY, we'd never heard of it.

Exactly.

Plenum also satisfies Riser rated, which would be more important for this case if he's traversing floors.
EDIT: also, during remodels like this, you never know when you might want to just cut through your duct work... I know I've done it in my house

I'm unfamiliar with that requirement/term.

Sure - but that's not what Travis said, and well - the OP wasn't specific.

Doesn't often come up in a home.

I've heard of builder's warranties on new construction. But it's like pulling teeth to get them to actually honor them, at least around here.

Never get a builder's warranty. No, this is a home warranty. They are everywhere here. People swear by them. It's bizarre that something so "basic" is so ubiquitous in one region of the country, and unheard of in another. But that's how it is. I've owned homes all over and only in Texas has anyone ever mentioned such a thing, and here it is just assumed that you will have one.
-
Obviously, they are crap. Like any warranty, you have to pay more than it is worth on average because you have to pay for the overhead of the warranty system, any corruption, take on any risks of non-payment, and pay for their profits. There is no real way for them to save you money. Once in a while, someone gets lucky and is the beneficiary of the warranty, at the expensive of nine other people who horribly over paid.
Having had one, I won't do it again. They sound great, but logic shows why it will fail. You spend loads of money, to them fight the system, and they always push for the cheapest, shoddiest repairs. And they only cover some stuff, not enough so you always pay anyway, but lack the ability to negotiate good prices.
And of course, if you fix anything yourself or have friends do it, you get screwed, too.
-
@scottalanmiller Sounds like our car/health insurance system too
-
Of course you should use Cat6.
- How many years will you live there?
- How much does it cost to rewire if needed in the future?
- How much does it cost to buy the Cat6 you need?
- How much is that in relation to the total amount of work and money you invested in redoing your basement?
Aren't we talking about 50-100 bucks here?

It does not apply ina house.

I believe any wiring in residential duct work is against code, not certain on that one.

I have one on my house. I've always heard about them around Illinois and MIssouri.
I never purchased one until the current house.
I will likely drop it as soon as I replace the furnace.
