@JaredBusch complex ≠ bad (not every time anyways).

i cannot find the timer, and it seems i need to configure a set/group first, then point to that set/group and assign the extension number. its not an on/off field and point to extension number.

You can create hunt groups, if A rings without answer go to B if B doesn't answer goto Voicemail.

That is an option for sure too.

yeah, but this changes the way people call him.

How? Call DID <whatever> it rings until no answer and then rings the next number and the next until you have it go to voicemail or drop the call entirely.

Because a DID is not an extension.

Hunt groups can work the same for both extensions and DIDs. But true.

No. They are different things. His ext is 123. You cannot suddenly make that a hunt group.

I never said you make extension 123 into a hunt group. You create a hunt group 998 add members 123 124 and 125 and voicemail

But then when someone calls 123. How does it get to the hunt group?

The same as going to another ext or whatever. The failover. So what is the point of over complicating the process by adding hunt groups to the mix

Granted it is probably complex, but it's what we required. Inward calls would go to the hunt group, ring 1 ext, then the next and lastly to voicemail (with a specific ring sound too)

Internal dialing would just ring the person and then voicemail if they failed to answer.

That is not complex. That is a pretty typical routing pattern.

But the OP said he wanted an extension to go someplace else after 3 rings. That does not involve inbound DID (directly).

It is possible I assumed he wanted inward calls (and not just extension forwarding) setup.

Does this extension receive any inward calls?

Not relevant. Why are you fixated on this?

It is relevant based on how the forwarding is setup (because you can have different call routing patterns for inside only or inward calls).

/sigh - sure he can - but the OP just said - extension only... so let's focus on that.

The point is the system should work, and to get it to work we need to understand the requirements.

If there is a DID attached to this extension, we need to know that. If this extension should never get voicemail we need to know that. If only internal extension dialing should be forward we need to know that.

Both @JaredBusch and @Dashrender are under some assumption that you ( @justin867 ) have asked a very specific question, but there are parts to the question that haven't been answered (or at least discussed).

You can forward only Internal calls to this extension, you could forward Inward calls that aren't answered at this extension. You could set time of day actions for this extension forwarding.

Many many options to be clear we understand your question. Rather than answering for A and getting PineApple.

And by "this extension should never get voicemail" I mean, from internal or external originating calls.

so what we did was 3 step process - put the extension number on first alternative, another on second alternative, edit the call re-routing for the said extension number pointing to the line of 1st and 2nd alternative. we use the current timer but instead of going to VM it goes to the alternatives.
