Zabbix can not connect to database on different server

more than two years after @scottalanmiller reported issue with database on different server, I am experiencing the same behaviour.
Is there any solution to this issue that I don't know of? -
We can't really help if you don't tell us exactly what kind of issue you're having. Provide an error log or something from the server in question

Most likely, MariaDB is firewalled. But could easily be a number of other things. Maybe SELinux on the Zabbix box. What OS are you running?
