@scottalanmiller @Tim_G while we're on the topic of portables and Linux distros, do either of you have an opinion on Mint vs Korora? I'm thinking I'll like the xfce desktop, but what have you found to be enjoyable and perform well?

I left Korora behind and stick to Fedora Workstation (for my pc/laptop).

I'd not use XFCE, use KDE instead. KDE only uses only ever so slightly more RAM for apps, but the difference is that these apps have more features you'll use. XFCE is basic, ugly, minimally functional, including the built in apps... which can be good if you're starved for resources on an ancient device.

But go KDE instead... you'll be glad.

Cinnamon is nice too. My top two favorite are KDE and Gnome. Cinnamon is great for learning a distro.

One thing that I found is that on Korora, XFCE is gorgeous.

On Korora, they all have the same basic look... so I wouldn't compare the differences between GUIs using Korora.

The point being, XFCE can be really nice.

Oh, yeah I agree. It's one of the most configurable GUIs out there.

I find that other than Cinnamon, I tend to use XFCE the most. But mostly, I stick to Cinnamon.

                      Still Surface hardware, though.

@scottalanmiller I'm assuming that's bad? I haven't heard much about them. I could care less about touch screen.

Surface are garbage. I'm no fan of Windows 10, but that's everywhere. I've got solid Windows 10 boxes. The Surface are, other than Lenovo which is a totally different issue, the worst hardware I'm aware of on the market today. It's absolute garbage. Nearly everyone I know gives them away for free. No one even wants them for free. I certainly don't.

@scottalanmiller My pc at home is Windows 10, I've used worst but I certainly don't have as strong of an opinion on it as some. That's unfortunate to hear about the hardware. The only mobile hardware I've ever owned was Sony, because I have a buddy who works for Sony and he is normally just giving stuff away. First had a laptop, it lasted me for about 4 years without issue and I only ever upgraded the RAM amount. I have a VAIO Tap now and once you get all of the bloatware out of the way it seems to be decent.

Lots of good laptop vendors out there. I've had great luck with Asus and Dell recently.

@scottalanmiller Yeah just hard to narrow down which one I want at this point, I struggle with a lot of options I don't even like restaurants with pages of menus.
