Software to manage Service & Parts Business
-
Have a friend with a ship that remanufactures starters, sells hundreds of parts in their retail store side and also does service/starter installations.
I'm not looking to get into this business but while I was installing a phone system he asked me the typical "what software can I get to better manage my business, ditch quickbooks"
As ML is big on open source I assume some of you might have some good recommendations?

Start with SaaS offerings. See if Wave Apps will do it (free) or if not, check Xero (not free.) Those are always where I would start for that. If they don't do what is needed, figure out what they cover and then figure out what is missing.

I vote for Xero there are lots of add-ons for all kinds of inventory tracking etc. It is def. the best thing on the market for accounting and having any sort of stability (because QB sucks) and all the pieces you actually need without any of the crap you don't.

@minion-queen - Not sure which subscription plan you use with Xero but just wondering how many users can have access? I thought I read somewhere that all plans include unlimited users or is their pricing a per user price?

As far as I know, all plans are unlimited users.

I used Xero many years ago, from the beta on to about 2014. Really great.
I'm not sure Xero or WaveApps has inventory management, haven't had a chance to sit down today. That is going to be a major component. I see "accounting" under waveapps but I assume that is his general ledger.
Xero was always big on API/integrations so I imagine it links with inventory systems.
Wave apps looks cool though and I've never tried it.

Take a look
https://www.xero.com/us/features-and-tools/accounting-software/inventory/
https://help.xero.com/us/Inventory -
So it seems waveapps doesn't do inventory, and Xero has it built in. And it doesnt appear waveapps have integrations with any other software or an API?
I am actually going to checkout Wave for myself now though seeing as they just added recurring billing. Bummer it doesnt have any way to support invenory, unless I am missing something.

Just another thing to consider is that Wave does not have check printing. It is a request that has been completely ignored by Wave. Don't get me wrong the platform is nice but check printing is one of those things that a lot of business need in accounting software.

@bigbear - Wave is great for invoicing. It seems to be their primary focus and continues to get better. However, the other features of the software seem to get ignored. It's great for personal use and small business use. For a decent size company I would probably pass at this point.

It is just a basic invoicing program really it's not a full accounting system
