Don't use Serverfault.com

You can find some good information on the StackOverflow family of sites, but the cruelty of the community dissuades me from participating.

Why not post it here?
When I was googling about it, I found numerous serverfault answers that were on the right track, it's just the right question wasn't asked. So I figured if I ask the right question, I'll find the answer by someone who I'm sure already knows or can point me in the right direction.
In fact, I'm sure the answer was already mentioned in another users answered question, but wasn't specific to my question... so I basically just needed a straight answer.
Anyways, apparently it's off topic even though there's hundreds of similar questions... so... no thanks. Site = blacklisted.

Maybe they knew you were from mangolassi so they assumed you'd be off topic
like me right now

That's the typical gripe I see from the threads I've read. People spend more time complaining about the syntax and structure of a question, rather than (often) applying some common sense to understand what's being asked.

Yep... basically this.

Yeah.... the value of a site like Mangolassi.it just keeps growing.

I'm trying to find a solution to a problem, which requires a software product... basically, I need to do "x", software "y" does it, but I'm looking for open-source. What can I do?
ServerFault is built around "X is broken, how do I fix it." What you are looking for is more a MangoLassi kind of site. They want only discrete break/fix issues there with no opinion options.

Why not post it here? Serverfault is kind of terrible all around. Sometimes you can get good stuff but generally the answers are bad practice or just plain security holes.
It's about "get an answer fast", not "have peers discuss and review what I am doing."

It used to be good, I used them before there was a Spiceworks! But obviously, that was a long time ago.

That's what people resort to when they have no useful input.

More that the value of others keeps fading away
