Is there an option to expand the ram or is it soldered into place with no option for expansion at all?

Not necessarily. Mine is.

AMD64, not x86. No 32bit options for Chromebooks.

Looks like other model boards will be released at some point with more RAM / CPU options.

Gee, I'd expect a much better price point for something that you have to assemble....
They seem to be promoting the self assembly as a benefit.

Of course, for that price and specs, you could just get a Chromebook and put Linux on it.
