      As a Ham and being involved in ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) previously, I watch for things like this to see;

      • how will it affect me
      • how will it affect those I know
      • how will it affect services

Knowing that @scottalanmiller, @Dominica and the girls; along with a number of other people both on ML and so... Hope that they fair well.

      Stay safe.

@scottalanmiller, @Dominica, @Texkonc, @NetworkNerd, and I are far enough inland that we won't get any thing more than a scattered shower or thunderstorm from one of the arm bands of Harvey.

@brianlittlejohn will expect to see more rain as he is more in the Waco area. Scott mentioned that @StorageNinja is down in that area, but I am not sure of his status.

There is an ARES crew local to me that is probably geared up and ready to go the minute that Harvey begins to evacuate. I'm keeping my radio close by and on NOAA along with the local 2m repeater, just in case. I'm not apart of the ARES team, but just like to stay prepared.

@nerdydad That is good to hear - I know that @scottalanmiller has mentioned a time or two of having to bail out the atrium of the house... so with the expected rainfalls,.. that will be a fun thing to deal with.

@RestoronixDavid & @RestoronixSean live in the D/FW area too, but haven't heard from them in a while.

Oh, sorry. I know we have somebody in the Waco area, but can't remember who they are.

@RestoronixDavid is traveling full time, so not in the area.

@RestoronixSean is heading to Seattle for a bit, so escaping.

What about @StorageNinja ? Did he make it out of Houston the other day?

I would assume that he has either vacated or is bunkering down because he hasn't been active for the last day or so.

He mentioned escaping like yesterday. But I spoke to him within the last hour on IM.

Did you pull that from the satellite directly?

I wished I could. No,.. I started with my local weather station and moved down. Since so much data is centralized for weather these days,.. most radar maps like this are 'connected'.

@gjacobse My dad (an extra) told me one time that he was able to pull the grayscale cloud images from the satellite, but I didn't have a chance to figure out how he did it. I'm sure its probably just a radio on a frequency with a slow scan TV.

I have sort of looked into it. I know one of the rPi projects I want to do has it... but limited.

and then there is using the SDR:
