Wrapped our AC ductwork in a fleece blanket today that I taped into place. That appears to have dramatically improved the efficiency of our air conditioning!

Amazing what a little insulation can do....

We had an insane heating bill the first winter in our house. After putting in new windows we cut it dramatically the next year.

Probably saved enough to pay for the windows in that 1 year. Some friends actually got a government handout to insulate and replace windows in the house, and all they have to do is stay in the house 5 years of which they've been there 4.5 now.

I hope that works out well for you! Are you getting the batteries to store the power, or just selling extra back to the grid?

I'm considering a solar PPA for my tenant property.. not sure if it's worth it to me or not. . .

@jt1001001 I am considering doing this and I'd be really interested what your end costs are and what location you're in if you're willing to share. No pressure.

Nice. Really wanting to do this too. If I did do this, I would just cut from the grid and try to be self-sufficient.

I am in AMherst, NY outside Buffalo. We are doing Net Metering so there's no local battery storage or going off grid just "spin the meter backward" when our solar generation exceeds our usage. Our town was offering a "deal" where they wave the local permit fees (electrical and building) if you sign up by a certain date. Out of pocket it will be $12000 ish for the installs then tax incentives lower that to a little over $8000 if I remember correctly (paperwork's at home). My dad offered to pick up half the cost as our Christmas gift (he can't do solar where he is too many trees) as long as I give him access to the monitoring (Yeah, Dads level of geek sometimes exceeds mine, he still has a Data General running in his basement!)

I wanted to do solar here, but the cost just isn't feasible right now. That, and we'd also have to start taking down trees at the neighbor's house to make it work for us, ha ha.

A few cups of gasoline a day would fix that issue.

I've got plenty of sun, just have to take care of the finance side of things.

Keep your eye to the legal realm to know if and when net meetering will get shut down in NY.

We had maybe 2" of insulation in our house when I bought it. Blew in a ton of cellulose insulation. Amazed at the difference.

I added over 110 bags of insulation to the attic, our bill went from (on a plan mind you) from $300 to $150.

That's a huge savings. I'd love to insulate the walls as well, but she's fighting me on that. . .

That's another conversation we've been having as well, but we wouldn't be changing a portion of the roof that get insulation. Just adding garage space.

Wrapped our AC ductwork in a fleece blanket today that I taped into place. That appears to have dramatically improved the efficiency of our air conditioning!

Amazing what a little insulation can do....

We had maybe 2" of insulation in our house when I bought it. Blew in a ton of cellulose insulation. Amazed at the difference.

I added over 110 bags of insulation to the attic, our bill went from (on a plan mind you) from $300 to $150.

That's a huge savings. I'd love to insulate the walls as well, but she's fighting me on that. . .

I really hope to do all of that soon. Although we are talking about changing the roof line, so a lot of work will be needed.

That's another conversation we've been having as well, but we wouldn't be changing a portion of the roof that get insulation. Just adding garage space.

We want to add whole new roof parts, like over an open space that we currently have.
