Has anyone heard of XPENOLOGY? Apparently you can install the Synology DSM software on your own hardware. Not sure I would trust this in production but seems interesting.

But why. . . are you realyl saving so much time and money up front that you'd need to do this?

I guess it depends on the Synology model you would be comparing against. The diskless DS3617xs costs almost $3,000. There are so many people on the FreeNAS bandwagon (I know not in this community) and this could also play as an alternative option there I guess.

Could be installed on a SAM-SD possibly

Again, I have not tried this yet. Not saying it is something I would just throw into a production environment. It's something I have not heard of until today. I didn't realize that DSM was open source.

no this will kill the SAM-SD idea, and @scottalanmiller will curse your dreams.

But the SAM-SD uses enterprise hardware, and an enterprise OS (like CentOS).

So while I see the point, I don't see the value.

Both suffer from the JPE, though.

No, the SAM-SD concept means enterprise. JPE means not enterprise. They are opposing concepts.

It's Linux. All of the important bits are just a normal Linux install. The DSM piece is just an extra layer of GUI that's only value is the Synology hardware and support. Without it, it's just anther FreeNAS without as many features. They've got no reason not to open all of it as there's truly no value in the code.

@scottalanmiller - I see your point. Well then...perhaps it could be of use for someone wanting to learn the Synology interface without owning a Synology

Yup, although the point of that interface is not to need to know anything 🙂 And they already offer free 30 minute tests of it online that you can do anytime. That's all it takes to learn, anyway.

But yes, you should be able to deploy to a VM without any problem.

If learning a Synology interface is the goal, I've got 2 junk units sitting on the shelf you can VPN into and muck around with, they are on the latest DSM.
