@scottalanmiller I'm a little on the fence. Its so damn expensive (and long). I would almost rather save the company some cash and go to SpiceWorld instead. Does anyone even go to SpiceWorld anymore?
Actually it seems to still be growing, but the core group has shrunk a lot. It's less and less people that know each other and more and more random one timers that aren't active in the community or don't even know that it is there. Although after the London issue this year, I wonder if Austin will have growth. Lots of people still wondering if it will go forward.
What happened in London?
Nothing, it was cancelled. They pushed it HARD to attendees and moreso to vendors at Austin last year. Then, a week later, just cancelled it. They did the right thing and paid for flights and hotels that people had already booked, but people were miffed. Especially given how hard they pushed it and then cancelled it basically the next day. Makes sense, though, the event was tiny and the attendees don't get social like in Austin so it's a very meh event. Holding the event in London makes it that way - too expensive for people to travel to so everyone that attends is local and so just goes home at night. So it's nothing like a normal conference feel.

Didn't SW just have some 2 day thing in London a couple of weeks ago?

Yes, they had a one day "All Access" event to make up for cancelling the two day SpiceWorld. People were so upset that they figured that they had to do something.

After going to Spiceworld once, I can confidently say there is little reason to go. In fact, if my ticket had not been comped, I would have been PISSED that I paid anything to be there.
The @scale cruise was super fun, don't miss that if you go. Besides that, the only other highlight was flaming Dr. Peppers with @scottalanmiller et al.
I've been there 5 times and to be completely honest, the biggest takeaway has always been networking with you guys. I didn't attend one breakout session in years 3 though 5. My admission would also be comped so the price is right.

Last year in Austin the ML pack stayed tight at most events. It was amusing, especially when spiceworkers would hear us talking about "that other forum".

Well, now my boss has squashed VMWorld all together and is "thinking about" SW. 2 months ago, I was approved for VMWorld and MC, now he balking because of the cost of MC...Accountants are a pain in the ass.

Well that sucks.
-
I'd love a chance to go to VMworld, but we'll have to see if that gets approved. I'm sorry to hear it got squashed for you.

It's cool, skip SW and go to MangoCon!

With Dell world out of Austin they might pull off some of the SMB or Gov people who were regional so low travel costs and can't go to Vegas for policy reasons.

It's long for you? I have to fly in on Friday. I have Sat morning VTSP classes to teach, and Partner and TAM day stuff on Sunday as well as VM Underground (The conference within a conference) so by the time I Craw out of Vegas a week later my liver hurts, I'm the mayor of 2 bars, and the dealers at the $5 table at the Ellis Island know me by name...
If you want a slightly shorter, smaller VMworld go to the EU one (Barcelona).

Where "policy" = "outstanding warrants".
-
Unless SW, as a company, changes policies, they won't see me.

I understand but I enjoy going to Austin and I have a good friend that I can see so SW is as important to me as the trip itself.
Are you going to MC this year?

Hopefully he makes it out to MC so he can hang with the team that got them their new SANs in place
-
I went once to SW and it was a good time meeting everyone in person. The event itself was a waste of time. There was one halfway decent break out session and rest was about marketing/sales face time. I did come away with a laptop though, so I had that going for me.

CANNOT. No time off. Boss would want me to take this as PTO and that bank is empty. I took time in May and now I have to start saving up for my August '18 trip.

Quit, find new job with more PTO?
