Tried to do D&D last night, but only one person showed up
Fail. I have a group of four starting up this week. I'm playing an arcane trickster this time around. Two of the Four people have never played D&D before.Online group?

We are using Roll20Roll 20 is a great tool. I had the $50 yearly subscript for years. Just upgraded to the $100 subscription to get help motivate me to get serious about some game design.
I love how only the DM needs to sub and the players get all benefits while in the game.

I am rolling my 5e campaign back to 3.5e/Pathfinder.
5e is not a horrible ruleset, but the lack of content coming out for it is just sad.
If there were more options in the core 5e ruleset without a lot of house rules, I would stick with it. But the current state of the ruleset is just too restrictive for my campaign.
That said, I would easily run or play a 5e campaign that was not part of my current world.

My Daerma Adventures campaign is every other Tuesday 7-11 CST/CDT.

I think we are doing it monthly though. Trying to ease these guys in. -

I run my game from 7-11 Central.
I have been running an online D&D campaign since June 29, 1999. Originally did an 8-12 slot, but that killed the east coast players every time we ran late.
So I migrated to 7-11 CDT/CST and have been that way ever since.
A couple years ago I even found the text chat log from that first game.

I've never witnessed someone make that transition. People who like it long term tend to join for the role playing. The combat stuff tends to turn those people off so you risk losing people if there is too much of that and too little role play.

Especially in the group I'm playing with now the role playing aspect is the hardest to get people involved in. I had the same thing happen in another group. Takes time to come out of your shell for some people

If you try and force it you will have nothing but unhappy players or DM.
We certainly have role playing and there are rare nights that we have no combat at all, but it is rare. We are a combat encounter focused bunch really.
That does not mean that we have no story or roleplaying.

Hard to make a transition when the system actively discourages role play. Recent editions of D&D are largely a miniatures battle first and an RPG as a way distant second(at best) priority.
If you are interested in story input and role playing from players you probably want to look at other systems. If you are happy with the way things go currently then play on!

If you're group is open to other systems. I'm in love with FATE. FATE is kind of the one-sized fits all system so it does a lot of things surprisingly well as long as you have a creative, and open, gaming group.
