@gjacobse what SDR hardware and software are you utilizing??

You can also use SDR# (SDR Sharp) from Airspy

Right now, I like SDR# better:

LOL.. the basement.. with a simple telescoping antenna.. now if I use the BIG antenna - EFZ 10/20/40m the 5/8wave 2m antenna.... I should hear some thing different.

          (corrected)

Point #3 seems to be a 'harmonic' of #5,.. same song / station..

Correction... #3 and #5 are dups of #1

Why would a pager be able to be reached any more than a phone that accepts SMS, are they not the same thing?

So my question is - why didn't they build receivers for that old tech into modern cell phones? If a AA can last 3-4 weeks, then having that antenna there and software listening for it shouldn't put much strain on the system... perhaps there isn't room? /sigh

Because pagers don't send - that's why it works so good. Two way ones do exist though.

You don't care about sending - use SMS to send. and if it doesn't work.. so what? It's receiving the message that's more important for critical messages. But I suppose that's the issue. pagers work by calling a phone number and typing in a phone number - or emailing a gateway address, which then converts to a pager outgoing message.

I wonder if two page pagers use the pager system or the SMS system?

@Dashrender I believe they do send on the pager system, not SMS. Again we're talking about a very simple relay system - there's no confirmation it worked either way.

Cellphones don't have them as it's an additional radio + additional cost etc.

Yet most if not all cellphones have FM receivers, just they are disabled in the USA. 😞 I'd gladly give up the FM for a pager receiver instead for critical messages. Though - how would that work? would you need a separate phone number?

Presumably yes, however they're phasing out the paging network everywhere so there's not much point looking into it
