Yeah.... I'm not the best at explaining that besides saying things like "I'd be more afraid of Microsoft dropping Outlook"....

@Breffni-Potter The end result is from fear that there is no official support for OBS we're developing a product using it at this time. And there is fear that because its free and open source, that "what do we do if it disappears, or we need help?"

And support is something that management would like to find. The fear is that because the software is open source, that it could up and disappear.

So we're looking for alternative software that works like OBS does to consider our options.

Any alternative would increase risk though, right? This is the only one with the massive protection of OSS.

@scottalanmiller Yeah but we're not necessarily dealing with people who are being rational about OSS. It's the mind set of "we bought it, we have someone to yell at if we need help"

@DustinB3403 Unless that somebody is no longer in business.

@Danp Yeah I've made that argument.. again.... the issue is the mindset of "if we buy it we can yell at someone"

Ask them "if they up and close up" who is this person you will yell at?

Remind them that if the vendor closes up, THEY are the ones that the customers will sue.

This one is a good point, as our customers would then yell / sue / no longer come to us as we can't deliver our product..

I'd ask them "What do you think happens to an OSS project when people stop developing it?" The answer is obvious to all of us, but they apparently need it spelled out. Nothing, it's still available and can continue on as if nothing happened.

@travisdh1 yeah I'm trying to avoid being the dick, as the people I'm having to convey this information too more or less ensure I have a paycheck.

                          But, yes that is accurate.

And you'd be on the hook for decisions that didn't account for continuity.

How is that helpful? I'm the technical lead on the project, so looking for ways to get people to understand the benefits not the perceived(made up) risks of OSS.

How much of the lead are you if you aren't making the decisions? It's helpful because you should not care more than the actual decision makers do.

@scottalanmiller I don't understand the question. Of course, because businesses are teams of people. On which everyone has to provide buy in.

So, they've given you the car to drive, but given you no input on what vehicle to get. Sounds great till you end up with a Prius to haul cargo, or a tractor tailor to transport people.
