Are you using XO or XOA XOA only, the community edition will install the updates, but not the features currently.

        And awesome.

I probably should've noticed by the "Premium" word there as well 😛

I think XOSAN beta will be available for any edition, don't know if that includes XO built from source.

It likely can be, have to take a look at the code.

It's not "built from source", see discussion here: https://mangolassi.it/topic/12700/when-is-something-built-from-source

Thanks for this thread. While I believe that I understood, and agree with what Scott and JB are saying, I didn't actually watch the install process of XO close enough to know if there was an actual compile process going on, therefore made an assumption based on the typical definition of "build from source" that source code was being downloaded and compiled.

Scott, other than dissecting the install script, how is a non dev person suppose to know if they are installing non compiled script versus needing to be compiled source versus pre compiled code?

I have compiled source before, both in Windows and nix systems, but have done it so little and so long ago that I did it by instructions, not memory or even complete understanding. Clearly I would never claim to know how to just hop to and build some source.

Yes, so everything is hosted within the same environment. No need to go out to StarWinds or HALizard.

We should start another thread where we compare / contrast these different products.

XOSAN is a paid option? If yes - good luck, both HALizard and Starwind VSA for Xen are (will be?) free. if XOSAN is free - very cool!

Well it's still a very early release, and it's not available without going and installing it yourself.

Which I was working on figuring out today for anyone who's willing to go that route.

And you're releasing StarWind VSAN for XenServer as a free option, that's awesome.

I assume you'll recommend support, even of the software is free? (Which is only smart for consumers)

Good idea. HA-Lizard doesn't cover that same ground. It's DRBD in that instance.

I don't think one can compare XOA + XOSAN to Starwind VSA or HALizard.

First, XOSAN is not available as a standalone product.
Second, XOA + XOSAN offer a lot of things that Starwind & HAL don't. It doesn't make XOA/XOSAN better just different.

@KOOLER the reason I say that support is only smart for consumers is that if software is free (open source) there doesn't have to be a massive investment in that purchase.

But paying for support, because 99.999% of everyone is not an expert on said solution, really truly does need support.

Even if it's only an hour a month. That times N is a very large customer base.
