It's amazing to me how many lengthy discussions on SW come down to just not knowing what basic technology is and having crazy assumptions about it. Like if people just knew what SAN and NAS were it would answer 90% of threads. Instead we have to have lengthy explanations over and over because lacking that simple knowledge of "what it is" leads to all kinds of insanity.

Why do you think so many with so little knowledge end up in SW?

IT Buyers community, and the funnel that they use both encourage it. IT Buyers would not be expected to know what a SAN is, and funneling in with the common denominator being "a free, but not open, app that sends a lot of private data out and requires Windows but doesn't work well" makes for a very "entry level" tendency to people funneling into the community.

My guess is that it is because most IT people aren't really IT people. They may work in the profession but they don't have the critical thinking skills or ability to do much within it. SMBs aren't capable (willing?) of spending the money for competent IT people so they go for whomever is cheapest.

Most that I've seen don't actually work in IT, they are on the buyer's side so represent the business in acquiring IT, but don't do it themselves, at least not primarily.

Wow, I just got muted for this post from days ago...

          0_1486658477248_Screenshot from 2017-02-09 17-40-47.png

Why would someone mute me over that, especially days later when I've not been on the thread?

Just the simplest clarification of a request is seen as hostile these days.

Because they have been welcoming home users and other tech-tarded individuals for quite some time. "For IT pros" means diddly-squat over there, anyone with a computer and an email address to sign up is considered an "IT pro" on SW.

I have 2 users right now that can't get any links to open correctly in IE. When a link is clicked, it opens a new window, full screen, that is blank and never loads up. Neither of them have installed yesterday's updates, and, I truly hate to say, we require the use of IE for our CRM and to connect to customer systems. Should be a fun day tracking this down, convincing users that "yes, you actually need to reboot".

I wouldn't be shocked to find out mods were doing some of that.

That OF thread is a perfect example of the state of things. Guy posts that his OF doesn't update. Um, of course not, they've been without updates for something like seven years now. That was the huge beef with them that they built on a useless, dead end OS that went out of business. There is nothing to update. I'm guessing he's run his critical storage for most of a decade without ever trying to update it before?

I can think of 2 reasons off of the top of my head.

                                      1. Your own cell phone. Don't have to worry about Google monitoring you with Android and more.
                                      2. Home Assistant with this could turn into an alarm system that can alert you if somebody was to break the hard line.

You know.. I never thought I would need 3 or even 4 monitors, but sitting here, working today, I realize that I could easily use 3 if not 4.

Assuming a 2 by 2 grid, The bottom two would be my main windows, ML on one monitor, another browser on the other for research. The top two would hold on going installs or something I'm monitoring, or email, etc.

I'm sitting here right now installing updates on XS, each one takes around 6 mins. so I bring up telegram to hit JB up with a question, and have ML on the other monitor, then I bring email up over the XS upgrade... so now i can't easily see the upgrade when it's done...
