Got this for a few seconds, then the page loaded.

There seems to be an issue with your site. Very long loading times (approx. 30 seconds here on a very fast line): 0_1485338388462_upload-9c9a5be4-17af-437b-8952-8a0516d184a8

I see root as something nice to have, as it enables me to have better control of my device. But is it really necessary for the android installed on this tablet?

Thanks for the catch @JaredBusch . I'll look at it later

@MattSpeller This tablet is ok. I don't use Windows 10 on it much anymore. I basically just use Android which runs fine, but you can buy a more powerful Android tablet at this price.

@dafyre For this tablet root is almost a must. Android is only given 8GB and only about 2GB are free. Root is required for something called Apps2SD. Otherwise on this particular tablet, you are unable to install any apps on your SD card.

That's good to know. I thought Apps2SD had been baked into the stock android for a while now.

An older version. I can't remember off the top of my head. I will have to check when I get home.

Yeah, I don't think this is an issue on newer versions of Android.

Given your experience with this is there a tablet (pure android) that you'd recommend?

I'm after: cheap, USB OTG, most internal storage for my money (but cheap comes first)

We can talk about $30-50 tablets or we can talk about $100 tablets. What is your budget?

Up to $100USD unless you think a few bucks more would get me a huge improvement

This is usually my last concern. Because almost all Android tablets take MicroSD cards. Tablets are so cheap and become "outdated" so quickly. Especially tablets for under $100.

This is part of the reason I splurge a little when buying a tablet. I want to get one that won't be totally behind the curve next week.

Fair enough - I'm using it as essentially a cheap laptop substitute to transfer data from uSD cards to bulk storage via USB OTG

If this is a project for you... and the uSD card is in an Anrdoid device, check out Xplore File Manager. You can share a folder from your PC and copy it over WiFi using that app. May be slower, but will be less of a hassle than having to shuffle SD cards around.
