I have a linux box that doesn't have SASL support compiled in and from what I understand, can't be added. I need to set up a SMTP relay and the email provider requires authentication that needs SASL support. Is there a way to use gmail as a relay without SASL being installed on the Linux box?

I didn't realize you could use Google for a relay at all - seems odd that you could, unless you're hosting your own domain on Google.

Any reason you can't stand up a LInux box in a VM (hopefully at that client) and use that as a relay?

Could probably build another linux box as a relay, but it would probably make more sense to build a new linux box with SASL installed and then install HylaFax on that so we only have one box to support. I've never set up HylaFax and I'm assuming it would have to be physical because of the modem, but I could be wrong about that.

Most hypervisors today can do port pass-through. If the modem is a PCI card, I'm pretty sure that card can be assigned to a specific VM, in most hypervisors.

If the modem is USB, then you can use something like a Anywhere USB from Digi and then you won't be physically tied to a VM host.

This has already been fixed, check your Skype. We did this yesterday.

They have three different relay modes. But none that you can use in any useful way without SASL.

Which is what we did last week 😉 It's all set up and ready to go through GMail. Test messages and everything.
