I'm really considering setting up some ubiquti equipment in the house, but don't know if I really need it...
It would only be a few ethernet lines to the areas that I see a need....

Right now, its a Buffalo router, which I have been somewhat pleased with, but I'm wanting something more robust. I'm trying to prep a computer with VyOS but it seems to be ornery with me so far. After that, I have an old Aruba controller and WAPs that I am wanting to deploy.

I'm using an ERX. When Laura and I get our house built I'm seriously considering decking my house out in the Unifi In-Wall AP's. I've heard great things. I'll most likely also have one UAP, but Each room will have an In-wall AP as well.

You'll probably be stepping all over yourself unless you plan to go 5GHz only on the in wall units, even then you'll probably have to tone down the signal.

I honestly don't know how much range they have. If it's really that good I would forgo the UAP probably.

Sure they are pretty inexpensive all things considered - but on in every room?
2-3 UAPs will normally cover a whole house with little to no trouble.

I'm not sure about the in-wall models, by the nature of things they won't be able to put out a signal well as a standard wall/ceiling mount AP. It took me a little while to figure out that the two UAP-AC-LITE units we have needed the power turned down on one, even tho they are in separate buildings and ~300' apart.

You cannot touch that price with Ubiqiti and full AC speed because you would need the Unifi UAP-AC-Pro to get full AC rate.
The ERX ($72.85 with Prime) and UAP-AC-LITE ($75.49 with Prime) work great for most but it is only like 800mbps on the AC band.
Edit: I was wrong the UAP-AC-PRO is $128.99 on Prime.
So the full speed is $201.84, that is only $25 more than the ASUS.

ASUS RT-AC56U And DD-WRT firmware. Works like a charm for what I need. I did have a problem where it would get slow and need a reboot every few week. I just scheduled a reboot every day at 6AM and it hasn't been an issue since.

My new google fiber provided hardware replaced my old setup that was an ERX and an 802.11n Ubiquiti AP. I plan on putting my ERX back in service in the not so distant future to provide a proper DMZ for my lab.
If I were buying new right now I would go with the @JaredBusch and @Dashrender 's suggestions of the ERX and AC-Pro or Lite.

I am replacing my Netgear DGN2000 which replaced a Netgear DGN 3700 which replaced the previously mentioned DGN2000 with a TP-Link VR600 (propaganda page: http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/cat-15_Archer-VR600.html)
I actively chose not to purchase an ASUS router due to their swiss cheese approach to security (landed them in hot water earlier this year).
Hopefully, I'll remember to post a review of the new thing after I set it up tonight.

I am revisiting this thread again. I have been putting this off for too long.
No cabling is run in my house. I have no real desire to run any. I don't game or have any critical applications that are run from my internal network. AC isn't a requirement, but I wouldn't mind having it.
I am thinking about picking up two of these puppies and using one as a repeater so I can have full coverage.

I've got a non-AC version of the ASUS router. It has been perfectly stable.
