Yeah - many tools don't like to touch HDs pulled from Windows systems that aren't cleanly shut down.
I have never experienced this. In my experience, if the drive spins, data is visible when the drive is plugged into a USB adapter or some such on another machine.
That would suck if every crashed system (non-encrypted obviously) was unreadable.
Yea.. Sadly my external drive cable is borked too..

Yeah - many tools don't like to touch HDs pulled from Windows systems that aren't cleanly shut down. If you don't care about the data on it, just format it and then run your tools.
If you do care about data recovery, definitely try going back to the original laptop and getting a clean shutdown. I normally do this by pulling all power (wall and battery) then doing a clean boot. The system will typically say it sees a hibernation file and ask to use or delete. Deleting of course will cause you to loose any unsaved data, but normally does allow you back into the system.
I've only seen this behavior when the drive was corrupted. You can still manage to pull some stuff off of it via a recovery tool or *nix but Windows doesn't like it.

You can reset the unclean flag from within Linux... Sadly, I can't remember what the command is, but I've used it a few times.
Google says "ntfsfix", but I'm not sure that's it.
-
I'm not saying you can't use the tools, only that they advise against it while the drive is in an unclean state.
Don't read in more than I type.

The one I'm thinking of actually works and fixes the problem and doesn't corrupt data... hopefully.

Right, yours just changes a flag maybe just a single bit on the drive
Spinrite for example will complain when you try to have it scan an unclean drive.

If nothing else, just boot the install CD from another computer and chkdsk from the command prompt.

wow that was a badly messed up post from a mobile (on android) post.

I won't know until tomorrow how fairs my data,.. however in the mean time, I guess I"m in the market for a new laptop. This one didn't make two years,.. and it's hardly traveled... so no harsh bumping.
So I will start looking..
Lenovo?
Surface?

Yea,.. I do jest. the Surface seems like a 'good idea' but done badly. Not going there. Unless someone wants to just outright give me one.
This was an ACER the 2 n 1 which lasted 23 months. (Warranty expired Feb 2016).
I would go either ACER, ASUS or Dell...

I know a company that should probably get rid of their surfaces...

Acer isn't bad. I've had a few and they have help up okay. Don't think about them too much anymore. Like Toshiba they seem to have faded from popularity.

Not for this guy. My laptop is coming up on 2 years old, and still runs like a champ... I just hope it stays that way, lol.
-
I have a Dell that is I don't know how many years old... running fine.
And a EEE-PC that is still running as well. I'm considering dropping a 120SSD in it to move to linux as it was / is WinXP.

Did you seriously just mention Lenovo and still have a job with NTG?
*edit
OK now I see with the surface mentioned also, you must be kidding. -
