You're on WD's site, you need to be on WD Labs site.

Don't blame me,.. it's the link in the article that I didn't write.

All of you has short term memory issues or something?

@jospoortvliet announced it here when it happened, only 17 days ago.

No short term memory issues. I just hadn't searched for Nextcloud Box on ML. That's my bad.

The per-configured, easy-to-use platform handles file storage and syncing. It requires no maintenance and enables users to install more functionality through apps like Spreed, video-conferencing; OpenHab, open-source home automation, and Collabora Online, a cloud-based version of the LibreOffice office suite.

Seriously, requires no maintenance? Does it auto update the OS and NextCloud and any apps you install? If not, then it has maintenance!

Seriously, other than cost, why use this over any number of other hosted cloud service for a home user?

Well, NextCloud 10 and on, have a new updated built into the GUI. No longer needing to be manually updated or updated via repo. This may be what it means. Still not no maintenance IMO.

Do you know, does that provide update for the OS too?

What happens where there's another patch for OpenSSL? All those NextCloud boxes on the internet are suddenly vulnerable.

Which is why I was saying it likely only means their auto updater.

It's Linux, it MIGHT update the OS. Easy enough to have the OS handle that automatically.

For home use, that would be great -- drop a bigger drive in there.

But for Business use, I dunno. I'll wait and see what others have to say.

It's a hobby device. NextCoud said so themselves. Not meant for business use. Just for fun.

Yeah, certainly not a business device, it isn't powerful enough for that. It is meant for home users.

And yes, it is designed to not require maintenance. That is, the OS automatically updates, as does Nextcloud itself. I think that at the moment, you'll have to re-enable apps, that is the only thing. We're working on making that work automatically too. Help is obviously welcome.

Oh OK this just got a lot more interesting. I personally feel that anything that goes to a consumer needs to handle 99.9% of maintenance tasks completely on its own. If it doesn't then most of us know that in a consumer environment it will never happen, and we end up with IOT devices helping to cause 1 TB DDOS attacks.
