One thing I learned recently is that there are no duties to be paid on purchases that are coming in from the US like a used server. Buying new means that the country of original build will decide if there are duty fees to be paid in addition to taxes. Purchasing servers in the US means I only pay the taxes of the CDN declared value. That being said, shippers like FedEx will charge their own CLearance Entry fees and Advancement Fees so unless you have an account with the shippers, these tacked-on fees make it too expensive to buy from the US, even if you do find a crazy good deal.

Yeah, we've researched it a lot for clients in Canada and for our own Canadian facilities. We can get amazing colocation in Canada that is both cheap and SO close as NTG HQ is right on the border. But in the end, there is no winning that way and it just isn't worth it to cross the border.
The only thing that really works for Canadians is to buy and keep all servers in the US. Buy Dell via xByte and host in Colocation America and work that way. Almost no one needs on premises servers today, those that do AND want to be in Canada are just screwed.

They don't MANDATE a search of your car. But if they do, that's jail time. Who risks jail to save their employer money?

Ha. At least in the US, it's illegal to fire someone for not breaking the law. If they try to do that, your job is protected.
Nah, I meant if you get caught doing something dumb like that even for yourself it's still most likely the end of your IT career.

When traveling though Canada because the route was faster, we got searched - so much for saving time, at least an hour at the stop. We just stayed in the US for the return trip.

It's something like 10% of cars get searched.

We were pulling an empty trailer. Of course they couldn't see inside the trailer, being enclosed. At least that part was fast.. but the luggage in the van, etc.. that still sucked.

well in our case it's 100%! We have a cottage in Ontario. Last few times we went up we got selected for the "random" search which of course takes 2 hours and we are extremely late getting there. So we have NOT gone up there with the kids because I do not want to go through that with a 3 and a 1 year old.
