So where might I find the best airfare deals to this shindig? All the options I've checked are a bit pricey, but I may just have to suck it up and pay... unless anyone here has some great, hidden, cut rate plane ticket connection.
JetBlue is generally pretty good. Flying into Rochester is super convenient, only 10 minutes from the conference. Flying into Buffalo or Syracuse is an hour or longer drive, but very feasible. Flying into Albany would be a huge pain in the butt and flying into NYC would be farther away than flying into Cleveland, but could be done.
Any of these cities: Chicago, Cleveland, Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica, Albany, Poughkeepsie, New York City (JFK, La Guardia) or Newark sit on the Amtrak line and you can get to Rochester via the train. If you are coming from farther than Albany this will turn into a ridiculously long train ride. From Utica or closer (which includes Syracuse, Buffalo and Depew) the train is very easy.
The conference is very close to the train station in Rochester.
And we can arrange for pick up of people if they choose this option as well.

All options pretty much suck... NY is really expensive to fly in to and out of.
I know someone that just got Rochester to LA for $99 round trip.
Grrrrr..... lucky bastard.
Sort of, but they had to go to LA so not that lucky. And no, it wasn't me.

The hotel likely would do it, too. It's closer than the airport.

If I end up attending I'll probably be doing this from Trenton.
-
I'm glad this hotel thread popped up... just figured out they screwed up my reservation and had to redo it.

That is a LONG ride, but there is a lot of pretty scenary and Amtrak is very comfortable. Be usre to get the Amtrak app for your phone, makes things much easier.

I've been worried that a lot of people had that happen to them.

You were the one who originally said it was a great idea. Are you backtracking?

I prefer the comfort and ease of the Amtrak journey even though it is much longer. As long as you have the time, it's what I always try to do. Too bad you can get out at Utica and explore their train station for fifteen minutes. It is gorgeous.
It's a great time to bring a book or do some quiet work. Bring snacks, you'll have plenty of time to eat.

Hotel reservation is sorted (had to add a second reservation to arrive on the 13th, different rate). Now how about that cheap airfare....

It was either that or drive.
By the time I drive to PHL, get there early, etc., etc., it's not worth it.

Yeah, the train is twice the length of the drive but SO much nicer. Be sure to get your Amtrak number and earn those miles, too!

Driving is 5.5 hours. Train is 8.25 with a 40 minute transfer included.
So yeah not quite twice but nearly.

Anything under 10 hours and I drive it as a rule. I love to road trip. Usually we do the trip from here in to Austin every year. But this year I will be flying not driving.

Well, we all know about you're road trips after that little jaunt out west you did.
-
That was the longest yet. And we did decide that at some point we are going to do that again. But at a MUCH slower pace.

I'd love to do one out west and then head for the west coast of Alaska at some point, or even the western islands.

Thats a drive... not as much as your cross country a few weeks ago, but still a drive.

I was considering driving, too.

My sister in law just did Houston to NY earlier this week.
