Advertising. They are heavily invested in Bing already.
Then why did they sell off adverstising to AOL a few months ago?
That's not a logical question to ask. Selling one product that they didn't feel was making enough money in order to buy another one that they feel has more potential is just normal. That they are both advertising based business units is only the loosest of associations. Combining them in that way makes no logical sense.
Imagine if Microsoft sold one of their software products to another vendor and bought a different one. Would you say "they sold off their software business, why are they buying into software?" Of course not.

Advertising on AOL, they might as well castrate them selves. The ads on AOLs' site is just at insanely high levels of stupid.
LinkdIn I could see as being a good advertising tool, but I don't really see how they are going to leverage it.

LinkedIn has a LOT of data in it. There is a ton of Facebook like focused marketing options.

Not ON AOL, to AOL. MS had their advertising division - and they sold it TO AOL.
I guess to use Scott's example, they could have felt that the current staff/content, etc was crap and instead of trying to fix it, they ditched it.. then turn around and buy a better one.

Probably far less about staff and far more about platform. Developing a new LinkedIn is probably impossible. Buying the existing one is easy. Fixing a marketing team with no platform is impossible, etc.

Yeah, I think the Phone name is dead, but they have Windows Mobile, which is a version of Windows 10 for small devices.
