Scale is actually partnering with a company for this now, called Workspot. They had a webinar yesterday. I got to sit in on it for a few minutes. I'll see if I can dig up some details.

I talked with Workspot. From the sounds, it looks like they are a cloud company, directly competing with VMware & Citrix.

My only wonder (couldn't get the question answered well enough), is why couldn't someone just virtualize their Citrix or VMware environment. How is Workspot filling the gap?

I wonder if any of the @scale folks can comment on this?

Yes they are. They are working with Citrix as well for XenDesktop.

No, they are nothing like that. VMware has almost no cloud offering. Citrix actually has no cloud offering. Workspot doesn't have cloud OR virtualization.

Workspot is just a connection broker and VDI management system here. They also do MDM.

Of all four of these, only VMware has a cloud offering and it isn't their big thing, virtualization is.

Hey that's me - the product manager on the video<g> ... and that was a couple years ago. Things do change! - I was also part of the webinar we did with workspot yesterday (I believe there is a recording available as here as well http://bit.ly/ScaleWorkspotWebinarRecording)

So with our recent introduction of HC3 nodes with integrated flash tiering (and corresponding larger CPU and RAM footprint) - running a greater number of virtual desktops on HC3 is now possible. In addition - new companies like Workspot have have greatly simplified virtual desktop and application delivery to a point where you can get it set up and be logging in in under an hour ...

This isn't official Scale marketing but here is a video I posted of workspot provisioning 250 win7 desktops on a 3 node HC4150 cluster (and honestly there is room for many more on that system)

With Scale HC3 plus workspot - all of your VM's run on your HC3 infrastructure but the workspot control center runs in the cloud so there is no complex software to install, manage or update on your site and new functionality can be added regularly - when users connect however they connect directly from their endpoint (ipad, laptop, thin client) to the VM running on the HC3 system.

Let me know if there are any other questions I can answer

You can do any VDI on Scale that you want. What Scale does not have right now is hooks for the VDI systems, like XenDesktop or Workspot, to manage the hardware for you. But if you don't want that, you can do any VDI approach that you want on top of Scale. From just installing some desktop OSes and off you go to using VDI management systems like Workspot and XenDesktop.

So what job does Workspot actually do? I tried to be on the webinar yesterday, but couldn't stay for long.

Edit: Thanks @davedemlow for the recording link.

In the case of VDI, they primarily provide the connection broker, portal and VDI management system; while your cluster (Scale in this case) providers the platform for the actual VMs.

This is good to know. Does Scale have any plans to support Graphics cards in their setups, a la NVIDIA Grid & the like?

@dafyre currently we do not ... but as above, things can change based on customer demand, technology changes, etc.

Awe man. What if we want to run CAD desktops on a scale cluster..........
