I'll have to double check.. But I don't think Mitel gear allows you to not use an "outside" line digit. You can replace the 8 by picking an outside line if you map one on your phone, but that's really no different than Jason's previously mentioned - Picking up of the headset.
Do you think this because you have no faith in Mitel or because you trust the same support engineering firm that is saying the other things?
If you only see Mitel filtered through their eyes, it would likely look really bad because they are likely covering their own limitations by blaming Mitel. I find it extremely hard to believe that Mitel has any of these limitations.

so you can't have doctors call an extension? they can't dial a 4 digit extension?
Of course they can - but sending a 4 digit extension to a pager when they are the hospital - the doc has no idea who sent that - was it hospital 1-5 or their own office? that's why the phone number has worked great for 20 years.
and was maddening when I learned it MIGHT not be possible anymore.Why not do a 5 digit extension? First digit denotes hospital, then the next 4 digits are the actual extension.

Right, he needs a common number to call no matter where people are calling from: internal or external.

This is one of those issues with DIDs. If you didn't have DIDs for everyone, only extensions like we have, this issue naturally goes away. It adds other issues, but minor ones.

By goes away I assume you mean, everyone would always just dial the same number, get an auto attendant then type in an extension?

So I asked the Mitel Vendor - can the 5000 do non 8 or 9 based outbound dialing. Here's the response.
Navigate to System/Devices and Feature Codes/Phones, open the extension that you want to not dial an 8. Flag it for “House Phone = Yes”. Then change both house phone day and night to “8”.
But, when you do that, you get
is there a reason that isn’t the default?
Then you wouldn’t be able to intercom. When that phone goes off hook it immediately is accessing ARS.

All that is doing is forcing the phone to always "dial 8" basically. Maybe I will have to revise my opinion of Mitel down.
I have only ever wokred on it at a basic level helping others. I never had a client own a system. Well one client has a Mitel system, but we only do some custom software for them.

on ours I don't even have to dial a 9 if I don't want too. I can do 7 or 10 digit dialing. But it takes longer for the call to process and send to the PSTN if you don't dial 9 first. It's all in the rules we have setup.

That's a Mitel as well? I know with Asterisk you can dial 10 or 7 digits with no additional delays. You're right it is all in the rules though.

That's a Mitel as well? I know with Asterisk you can dial 10 or 7 digits with no additional delays. You're right it is all in the rules though.
There's likely some delay even with Asterisk. It has to realize you're finished dialing.
No, we use Cisco.

Yep, exactly - so yeah... dialing 8 or 9 is required.
