What is OpenIndiana? It's a UNIX OS. Solaris 11 was originally open source and was worked on under the code name Indiana. It was going to be OpenSolaris. Then Oracle bought Sun and changed direction, Solaris 11 became closed again. The OpenSolaris work continued under the name OpenIndiana and has been a UNIX option every since. The OpenIndiana project is the key provider of OpenZFS and is the basis for products like Nexenta.

Indeed, why they didn't rename it heaven only knows. It's just horrible and confusing. I wonder what epic amount of market share was lost from that name choice alone!

A lot of people have wondered, but apparently the project leaders are huge fans of Muncie because they don't want to change it. Almost anything would work better, why not OpenHelios? It's a great parallel, I mean I could come up with 100 better ideas in half an hour, when it's apparent to me they put no thought into it and just ran with it, saying "yep, this is good, it's confusing and it's named after a US state."

Oh, the state. I thought that it was named after the dog.

The original project Indiana was actually led by Ian Murdock, better known as the founder of Debian.
Ian Murdock grew up and lived in Indiana so there is no wonder why he chose this project name.
The initial Solaris Express project which stemmed from Solaris 10 and preceded Indiana was codenamed Nevada.

There have been several discussions regarding a name change but I think for now and considering the recent passing of Ian Murdock the name will stick a little longer.

@cwekurtz Nevada is not only a cooler place than Indiana, it's a cooler name too.

Nevada just means mountain range, though. It's a silly name for a place. At least Indiana was named after the famous archaeologist’s dog.
