But it'd be a nice place to hang out and just chill without cluttering up the forums with funny cat pics.

Well, shoot.... Now I can't upload my funny cats!

@dafyre You can! but I have to fix it first

I have to say I'm not sure how much I'll use a chat program that requires a full tab in my browser.
make that thing a desktop app and I'm much more likely to use it.

The Slack desktop app doesn't work as well as the browser tab. I actually moved the other direction.
But "another" channel of things pinging me is too much. I'm overwhelmed as it is.
-
@Dashrender they have a desktop chat client! It's right on the front page on rocket.chat!
-
@coliver I fixed your username! Come chat with us!

If I wanted something like this I would just use Slack.

Only issue there is the cost. Even for a relatively small team you are likely to not be happy with the free version after too long. We tried it at @NTG just to test it out and after a few days knew that only the paid version would cut it and the cost was too high.

Right, but running RocketChat is not free either for any serious amount of traffic. Which calling something like this "IT Pro Chat" hints at a desire to have.

@JaredBusch granted. I'm speaking more as an internal messaging platform like Slack is traditionally used for. If I had a team of twenty and wanted to store conversations, it seems like a good option.

That I can see. The free version of Slack is definitely not good for team communications where you want to store the history.
-
The way it is laid out and set up kinda reminds me of something like Google Wave -- as @scottalanmiller said -- definitely good for teams and collaboration.
I like the "Channel" approach too... makes it feel kinda like old fashioned IRC chats, only better.

The idea of ditching email for something like Slack or this would be awesome!

I like this idea for my internal use entire company!
I hate email so much. -

Oh yes, when paid for, Slack is a great tool because you have the history and channels can be dedicated to projects, etc.
But for a generic "IT Pro Chat," I see no point.

what is this free version of this ITPro chat thing missing that Slack has?
