Well wined and dined isn't really the right term lol. They asked me a bunch of questions they asked me last time, and threw in some doozies like "if you make a change in the DNS server and someone's computer can't get to a site, what's one thing to try?".......
The guy that interviewed me again showed he doesn't have a grasp of the things he says he does. And they could have a split horizon DNS. I asked him about it because there is a piece of paper on the conf room pc with the pc name, its computername.domain.com. I asked if they had issues with split horizon, and he said " I'm not sure what you're talking about" so I pointed to the paper and started to explain and he said "oh, no we don't have that. The last admin let our domain expire so we had to use a new domain name.". He clearly thought that split horizon meant a local domain of domain.com and a domain for the website of other domain.com, and even if that's what I meant, the answer would have still been yes.
He also said " the whole reason to run Linux is so you don't have to reboot servers." I kind of just wanted to leave at that point.

He also told me be stopped using CentOS at 6 because he didn't agree with the new changes. I assume he means systemd, but he couldn't remember the name. I'll give you a months pay if he can explain any differences between init and systemd.

- Binary log files in systemd rather than text.
- start/stop scripts are in a new location instead of the /etc/init.d I'm used to
- Systemd is supposed to be faster by starting things in parallel instead of serially.
That's off the top of my head.
Doesn't mean it's not still crazy.

Maybe just reject the job and go talk to his boss anyway - tell him how much their guy is hurting them.. and since you withdrew your name, you're telling him because you believe in good IT, and that guy is clearly not giving it to them.

He might be good at bench work because he was talking about how the cabling was bothering him and whoever set it up before he was there didn't use patch panels, etc (but that's low level stuff). But he's one of the "Systems Admins" (there are 2 for like maybe 5 servers). They are "swamped" with work and need another person to come on.

I have 5 servers and 88 staff members - IT department of one. 80% of my time is spend taking care of end user problems, not server problems. As I'm sure you know, as long as the server are setup correctly, they require very little hand holding.

Similar setup here, maybe 50% more junk and ppl but with 3 IT staff (two techs, one admin), and 5 locations (and counting)

Ya but you have more servers (possibly, they are running their other VMs on virtualbox) and more staff and only you doing it. They have 3 people and adding another, and only maybe 25 of the staff are using computers, the rest is in a warehouse doing packaging and blending.

Holy crap! They have two and want a third for 5 servers and 25 users? WTF? Sounds like they need a complete overhaul.
Perhaps you should offer to do a write up of their entire environment and make recommendations about changes, but not take a job there.
