Consumer Oculus Rift - $600?

I thought the dev kits were subsidized by VC money? That was one of the reasons they were so inexpensive comparatively.
Probably true. I think the problem is now price anchoring. Everyone has in their mind that the cost of an Oculus Rift is ~$400, so jumping up $200 makes everyone feel like it's too high.

This doesn't seem that bad. A good set of monitors can run you ~$600, if you want a similar not-on-or-tracking your head experience.
-
Yeah I'm sure a good case can be made for the price being what it was. I just didn't expect such a big jump from the dev kits to the consumer version.

I don't doubt this. I seem to recall a blog post somewhere that Oculus was breaking even with the Dev kits... this seems like a fair margin if they hope to keep developing... especially since this is a fairly niche product.

I'm in the camp where the number seems reasonable for what you get but the price is too high for me to buy one.

I tried the latest Dev Kit not too long ago with Super Monkey Ball? Or something like that it was a demo where you were mini golfing with a monkey in a ball. I was sick to my stomach the rest of the day.... I probably won't be investing in VR any time soon.

It's all about expectations. They should have priced the dev kits at $700 and then $600 would look like a bargain.

Very true. I had the same reaction.

I want the OR but I would mostly use it for 2D gaming. I just want a high quality private viewing system.
-
Wow! I wasn't expecting this price. For that kind of money, I will wait for v 2.

And I am supposed to know who that is?
Yes - he invented Minecraft and sold it to Microsoft for a billion dollars. That's what makes the joke funny.
-
@Nic I thought it was 2 Billion...

You could use the poor man's oculus and use google cardboard.
