I use Winbooks velcro'd to the back of a TV for GPS software. up on a wall display because the software requires windows.
Non-domain joined systems but the work for the need and cost < $100.

My colleague is going to set it up, but he's busy. I have taken it out of the box and managed to drop it on the floor though, which is a good start

Yes, searched about that, apparently its the same Windows 8.1 only thing is its default IE search engine is Bing!

8.1 with Bing is the "free" windows version for small devices I believe. It is not Pro to my knowledge.
