We've completely derailed this thread (there I've said it).
It's like in the UK they used pissed to mean drunk and a fag is a cigarette. These just don't fly in the US.

Sure we do. Kitchenette, dinette, launderette, and names. "Ette" is a standard feminization of a word. I don't know the root of cigar, but cigarette literally means "little girly cigar."
Same as cigarita would mean in Spanish.
