why is there a switch between the phone and the laptops? is it two laptops to one phone?
-
OK more basic.
Classic IT closet with POE Switch > wall outlet to office > phone is connected to outlet > secondary ethernet on phone feeds the switch > the laptops are connected to switch.
-
Yep, 2 laptops to 1 phone.
-
OK that makes a bit more sense... I'm guessing they don't have two ports on the wall from the closet IT switch? Assuming that's the case, can they make this happen?
-
No that can't happen, the trouble is only a single Ethernet drop was run to each of the offices to save on the cost of building the office.
But its now becoming more of a pain more than anything else.
-
Wait, each singular drop is PoE? That = screwed. It should go wall -> switch ->PoE inj to phone/laptop1/laptop2. The way your setup is done is just plain wrong.
"Nobody will ever need multiple network ports! Nor will they ever need anything to go faster that 100M!"
-
I guess it boils down to how much they want WoL to work? It might be worth the $125 to run a new cable to solve the problem (and really they should run two cables, not just one, since there are three devices in that location). so maybe $200.

Without getting into the ordeal of why best practices were ignored, I am well aware of what should've been, and what is.
I didn't have a say in the office setup, I'm just stuck fixing the issue..

@DustinB3403 Maybe next time you can get yourself invited during the design & build phases.

How do you fix it without having a say?

What. The. Crap?
I know. I know.
Single wall Ethernet with POE to feed power to the IP Phone. The IP phone has an output for the "computer" which is actually the switch, which then has the 2 laptops connected to it.
It's totally bonkers.

I wasn't asking why best practices were ignored, i was offering a solution to the problem at hand. They want you to fix it.. THAT is the fix for it. Run one or two new cables - the problem is solved.
There might not be a non cash outlay problem to get you to the solution you desire (of course they are already out the time they pay you to work on the problem).
Are you salary for this company?

Celery, yes that stuff for rabbits and me it would seem.
Thank you for the recommendation @Dashrender
