Guess what made up the entire computer lab in my high school... Yep IBM PS/2. They actually network booted.

That's crazy. that must be all that IBM ever managed to sell.

My theory is that some company bought a whole bunch of them, realized they were terrible, and donated them to the school for a tax write off.

They had all apple IIe's at my computer labs growing up. I was always told it was because apple basically gave them to schools for near free, maybe at cost or something, and that it was part of the strategy to get people on one particular platform at an early age. It was always inconvenient because the files were never compatible between our home PC and the ones at the schools.

That and the Apple ][ were just awful.

Bring a bunch of business cards. If you collect them from people, write on the back why you might contact them again. For example if you talk to them and find out they own a MSP as well, you write that on the back, so when you get back you don't contact them thinking they were the VoIP guy you talked to. It's cool to meet colleagues in other parts of the country where you don't want to post stuff publicly, but since you're not competing, you can share numbers with them. It's nice to be able to hand them a card.

Set your out of office reply and someone else cover your phones. It sucks to have to talk time out of a conference to take a call or pound out an email. Your time there is so limited, you need to make the most of it.

Travel light and make sure you have room for swag on the way back.

Oh, if you are doing CTRL-F during boot to configure RAID, pretty likely it is FakeRAID. But the one in your other thread didn't support that. That's a unique one, though?

I agree here, but there is a minimum viable product of soft skills where even other tech people don't want to put up with your shit, or your ability to communicate with other tech people is crap and so you don't get good feedback or collaboration. The 10x engineer who belongs in a closet is something that fewer and fewer companies will put up with. Hell Linus recently admitted he needs to stop being an asshole. Netflix has an official policy to not keep them.

Lacking soft skills doesn't make you an asshole, though. That's not the alternative. Soft skills is a lot of things. Being nice isn't one of them. Being nice is just being a good person. Seeming to be nice when you are actually an asshole, now that is a soft skill.

I worked with a guy like that. Came across great, but openly admitted he was a horrible person that would screw you if he could. Great soft skills, mediocre hard skills, not a nice person.

Not that it means you can do something about it. But knowing that the boss is most likely just trying to blow you off, or just trying to make things complicated for some personal reason at the expense of the company makes it far better to be able to at least learn from the scenario.

Your quality take aways here include...

Your boss is not to be trusted (why, we don't know, but a reliable source, he is not.) Look for another job (you know this, but it's a reminder.) You now know PCI far better than before (and better than your boss.) You now have more experience in evaluating someone giving excuses rather than actual logic.

I have Amazon Prime so I get unlimited photo storage through that (including raw image files).

Blacklight isn't actually ultraviolet. You can't see UV, but you can see blacklight. At least everyone I know can. It's right on the edge of being UV, hence why it is a deep purple rather than invisible. But it's still visible. They just always call it UV to make it sound cooler than it is. Not that it isn't cool, but I can certainly see it. That's why lots of places light with it, even when not triggering the effect that people want, it's still enough to see by.

The violet glow of a black light is not the UV light itself, but visible light that escapes being filtered out by the filter material in the glass envelope.

It depends on what you refer to as "black light".

If you define a blacklight to be the device itself that emits UV light, then yes, you are seeing the visible light that escapes as mentioned above.

And FFS, to finally readdress my original point, the light isn't black.

As well as some unfounded bias that Red states contribute more than Blue states. In fact the exact opposite is true. I think if you do some actual research youll find most of your opinions on governance are wrong.

Not outdated, just wrong. They were never true. And it's always been taught in security circles that that stuff was obviously wrong.
