There should be no issues switching providers. I'd recommend PCM, too, we've gotten some seriously good buzz about them. I've got a UK contact, too. Just spoke with him this morning.

Thanks Scott. I expect that we would see no issues, just want to be comfortable about it before giving the go ahead. Generally, do you just provide new supplier with the agreement ID of the existing subscription and they then sort the rest after payment?

@obsolesce said in Who's hosting this website?:

Maybe it only knows who the authoritative name server hosts are, not the web server company?

      Example:
      webserver = godaddy.com
      name server = hover.com

Here, the @ DNS record on hover.com simply points to the IP of the web server hosting the website (godaddy).

...or some type of confusion around that.

Oh absolutely that's part of the issue with some tools; the verbiage can be misleading about what the tool is actually looking for. Sometimes their intended use is looking at name servers and seeing who's hosting a domain, not a web server.

Also makes it nearly impossible if a company is using a proxy, like CloudFlare.

I think that like most of these things, they expect you to manage it through Group Policy or similar mechanism if you want control instead of relying on OS defaults.

      It's a workgroup environment.

None of those mechanisms depend on AD. AD provides no functions of that nature.

While third parties can take advantage of Group Policy - what is your Free solution recommendation for taking advantage of GP in a workgroup setup?

I'm pretty sure local policy is not considered GP.

Local Policy IS GP. It's always local policy, just whether set remotely or set locally. GP is just setting local policy. There is no central control, it's pulled by an agent on the client and local policy is set by the agent.

The sky is the limit for replacement.... script, Salt, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, cfengine, etc.

Depends what you want. nmap works well for a lot of info. arp-scan gives you a simple table of MAC, IP, and manufacturer.

@kelly said in Routers Vs. Firewall:

You went pretty fast up the hyperbole chain there @scottalanmiller. I don't think this discussion is helpful to continue with the ways you're choosing to discuss things.

It's not hyperbole, it's just common sense. You can't say a firewall isn't a firewall because you don't feel it does enough firewalling compared to routing. That's just silly.

Anything that you use to show why that's silly, will sound ridiculous, but it's a silly thing to have to explain. It's clearly not a viable way to name things.

A router is a router, no matter how much firewalling it does. It's status as a router is absolutely based on if it routes, not "if it does other things in some quantity."

Hyperbole would only apply if the silly examples were to some degree sillier than the original language. But they are not. The "I'm a man and I'm 42" is identical in every way to "it's a router and it is a firewall." Not in the slightest way exaggerated.

Restoring a DC is nothing in a SMB with only a single DC.

As has been discussed many times here on ML, it really is so easy, it's a wonder why it isn't done more. (AKA, the single DC route.)

Wouldn’t users in sites that don’t have a local DC experience performance issues?

Not typically, AD does essentially nothing. The amount of time it takes to pass a password around in this day and age is milliseconds. A few milliseconds during a login operation is not something people notice in the least.

Can you run two APs in mesh with just the mobile app setup? I.E. one connected via Ethernet and the other just powered on and uplinked to the other AP?

Not sure, I have only tried through the controller which does work.
