Cost and Licensing: Yes, you have paid for Sharepoint in a bundle, but you are still paying for it. In the E4 breakout, it's $4/mo of the $20/mo total. And you need to pay for that for everyone who uses it. Most organizations have lots of exceptions that would only need that one thing, but have to pay for more or whatever just for that one thing.

Cost of Management: Sharepoint takes a bit of time and effort to maintain. Plus backups, if you want any protection from mistakes on the client end, isn't included so is both effort and money. Sharepoint requires training and work to keep working

Performance: The system, especially through O365, is very slow and cumbersome to use. It's just not fast so people get frustrated with it.

End User: We found our less technical end users unable to cope with basic data management concepts and would throw data all over Sharepoint because they couldn't understand basic things like tagging, filtering and metadata

Yes, you are correct. There will be no need for VMs conversion, StarWind devices should just be replicated to VSA. This can be done with the help of StarWind support guys.
By the way, I this conversion is required only for the HyperConverged scenario on VMware, where StarWind VSAN service is located inside VM.
With HyperConverged scenario on Hyper-V, StarWind VSAN will be installed inside Windows OS which is running Hyper-V role, thus you don't need VSA at all.

@nerdydad - Yes, you do get a skimped down version of Azure AD with the O365 license. The prerequisites mention using Azure AD, but don't say which one, except where they say that the Premium version is optional for auto enrollment with intune. Although, they have several plans/tiers, including 2 premium tiers.

You can use Veeam Endpoint, but it does require a license to backup to ODfB. That is more of a premium feature. Otherwise, you're tied to some type of local storage, whether on your network or to your PC.

I was just giving an example of free software like Veeam, if it requires license, I will look for other free or cheaper option.

I don't know if they are critical or not. From what I see online files like .DS_Store is just to show metadata to the mac client. This is likely the tag color etc for the Mac Finder, which for me (personally) doesn't matter. But I'm sure it would affect business pretty heavily.

@kelly - Yeah. I think Jamf have a 25-device minimum. I was looking at it for the 6 Macs we had. I don't know if it makes sense to do the iPhones MDM on it, since we also have Android devices that I need to manage. Hmm

We do the above on all servers we deploy since they all have a 128GB or 256GB at the most host OS drive and it's not uncommon to be deploying over a Terabyte of RAM.

Good work! I admit I would have been to lazy to go through all that. I would just have written a program to deal with it straight up instead instead of trying to use nix commands and scripting. Anything to avoid "escape hell" as I like to call it.
