Speaking of which, I need to go build a new jump box at a client site. MeshCentral makes our jump boxes more flexible.

I was following your thread on MC vs SC. What about MC makes it more flexible for your scenario?

      Cost, speed, development, support, etc.

We've already gotten better support for smaller issues in MC than SC provides when you pay an arm and a leg and it is show stopping stuff!

MC will save us something like $1600 a year, and provides some really nice features that we like. And seems to have a bright future. SC has appeared to have gotten worse, not better, in the last two years. That's not good when you are paying so much.

But we really like the insanely fast "in browser" connections in MC. SC causes so much delay that it is frustrating. Only a few seconds, but when you are trying to work, unnecessary stopping and waiting makes people frustrated.

      @JasGot said in Exchange connectors:

I need some help sorting out the exchange connectors on a server.

We were called in to figure out a spam problem. It's not severe and during our exam, we are trying to check the configuration of Exchange and get mail test tools to be happy.

Right now we are getting: Reverse DNS does not match SMTP Banner from mxtoolbox.

This is a simple MS Exchange setup; One Exchange server on a domain, people connecting with MS outlook from inside the building on the domain and from outside the building using Ms Outlook, and two copiers that can send e-mail.

The issue is all the receive connectors. It's not clear to me which one mxtoolbox is seeing.

      They are:
      Client Frontend EXCHANGE
      Client Proxy EXCHANGE
      Default EXCHANGE
      Default Frontend EXCHANGE
      Outbound Proxy Frontend EXCHANGE
      Scan2EMail

I'd like to know what each one represents. ie; I presume Frontend mean Internet facing, but I'm not sure. Also, do internal MS Outlook users connect to a receive or send connector? (or both?)

      Thanks.

You should change the ELHO name on all of them so it matches your external URL (Which in turn needs to match your Reverse DNS name).

The Outlook clients connect to the Exchange server and Exchange sends the emails they do not connect to the connectors.

You could deploy an image using FOG

While this was my initial thought as well, he has asked about doing this simultaneously. Which fog generally isn't "all at once go".

It kind of is...I was using FOG to do multicast imaging 7 years ago. We're talking 30-60 machines at a clip.

Sure it can do it but that doesn't mean that you should do it. It's about network performance and if you're not setup for it you'll encounter massive slowdowns

Mutlicast is the way to go. You can even do it over broadcast domains. It sounds like you didn't have multicast configured correctly? Even doing 60 machines we didn't see any network slowness associated with imaging.

I'm looking into MailCow now with the holidays approaching (a little more free time... hahaha, not really) and it looks really slick.

Free time? What is a "free time?

The time I'm sitting waiting for Comcast networking to catch up 😉

ah yes, comcast time. That is coincidentally the same time that is used for when you make an appointment. between 8 and 2

@Obsolesce said in Generating a list of Software to Reinstall on Windows 10:

I usually just copy/paste a Chocolatey install command that does it all at once. Everything else is on separate media that requires no install. Example, copy over games, import them in... such as into Steam.

I was going to mention... with Chocolatey tool choco list -lo just pipe it to a text file.

But that only gives you things installed through Chocolatey. Dustin's OP gives you everything installed through the normal Windows installer process (and registers the install).

I recall when chocolatey didn't use the windows installer process for everything - things are much better now.

It is package by package. Lots of things, through Chocolatey or not, don't use the Windows installer process.

I've not seen Chocolatey not register software installs in Windows, ever.

I have. Many times. Most of the time I think that it does, but it is not Chocolatey that does it when it does.

      With what software specifically?

Try installing Sysinternal tools, it will not register at all, that is one example. You can do so with Chocolatey.

I never installed that stuff anyways. That Chocolatey doesn't is nothing new.

I thought you wanted to know which applications would do that, but I guess I read wrong.

One thing we haven't used yet but we are looking into is the 3CX web/video conference functions. It doesn't count toward simultaneous calls as it is it's own thing. I think the limit is 100 participants or something.

Oh, that's odd. So it is "free", to its limit, how do people dial into it? We have video conferencing with both NextCloud and FreePBX, and it lets external users into it.

Then there's no reason to make files.gemequipment.com. Just stick with files.gem.local until you're ready to make that public. Then once you make it public, you can get whoever controls your external DNS to add files along with it's public IP.

Be aware that you might run into some performance issues with that unit and openvpn - depending on the speed of your link and what cipher the openvpn server uses.

Expect to top out around 25 Mbps according to this: https://community.ubnt.com/t5/EdgeRouter/Test-ER-X-OpenVPN-performance/td-p/1615188

The 2.0 firmware will increase that thanks to a community member posting some new configuration changes to the source code.

@mroth911 said in locking down network:

so basically I am helping with my church/School , they need to connect to apple/android store. youtube. but social media sites locked down and p2p networks and anything inappropriate for k-12.

So OpenDNS is doing the trick for now., However there is no cherry picking, and certain users need the ability to connect to facebook as well. Posting via webpage what is going on in school etc.

      Thats the situation at hand.

They received a letter that someone on the network was downloading from BitTorrent. and it broke digital media anti-piracy law. etc. So they are naturally freaking out.

This is something I want to setup and walk away.. I am just doing this to help them.

Blocking Bittorrent without an application level firewall isn't that easy. Talking to the tracker happens via DNS, but talking to the other clients normally is just via IP address.

You could block all non needed outbound ports - but again, I think Bittorrent can work over port 80 and 443, so not really that helpful.
